Diving Holidays to Sudan, Red Sea

NEW 2015 ITINERARIES: DEEP SOUTH SUDAN TO ERITREAN BORDER

7, 10, 11 and 14 NIGHTS ON MY VOYAGER

reefs in SudanThe profuse and perfectly preserved reefs in Sudan bear witness to the Red Sea at its best. Almost every dive will offer a myriad of schooling fish and a dazzling display of coral gardens. Dense forests of soft corals and some of the world's best hard coral formations act as a Mecca to several species of sharks, barracuda, mantas and a huge variety of reef dwellers.

Once again Diving World Sudan leads the way in offering new itineraries to remote and unexplored dive sites. Our Deep South Sudan trips sail as far down as the border area between Sudan and Eritrea where marine life is undisturbed. This marvellous expedition starts with best dives south from Port Sudan, followed by the remote reefs in the Suakin Archipelago and then onto the Dahret Group of Islands and reefs short of Sudan’s border with Eritrea.

Sanganeb Lighthouse Sudan

Experienced divers with a keen sense of adventure can embark on our challenging Sudan expeditions. Diving World operates out of Port Sudan on board the MY Voyager, MY Gelen, MY Horizon, MV Don Questo, Felicidad and MSY Elegante.

Wrecks, drop-offs and spectacular caves are just some of the attractions for the serious diver and underwater photographer. Sharks and mantas in unbelievable numbers are encountered in a technicolour marine environment, made all the more dazzling thanks to unsurpassed visibility.

Most of the diving in the Sudanese Red Sea is on coral pinnacle formations rising from great depths. These attract fish life in vast numbers, including large pelagic species. The microclimate created by the mountainous range on either side of the African and Asian continents and the deep active volcanic rift which creates hot currents all year round, makes the Sudanese Red Sea richer in sub aquatic life than any other in the region. The average water temperature is around 27 to 28 degrees centigrade with a winter low of 24 degrees and summer high of 28 degrees.

In the early 1980’s when border restrictions between Egypt and the Sudan were more relaxed, Diving World Red Sea would embark divers on board sailing yachts from Hamata in Egypt's deep south, and travel down to Port Sudan.

Operations subsequently changed to departures from Port Sudan on 1 and 2 week trips. The experience which was acquired from their long standing presence diving the Sudan has now evolved in the design and construction of better vessels and new itineraries, north and south from Port Sudan

You can rightly imagine that offering our guests an adventure on a splendid M/Y such as Gelan fills us with pride and gratification.

Gelan was built in 2007, re-fit in 2009, and again in 2013. A full refurbish was made in in December 2014. We are looking forward to beginning the new 2015 season in Sudan in top condition. Without taking anything away from the aspect of the boats we have managed in the past - Sherazade – we can assure you that Gelen offers a significant step up in the luxuriousness of our cruises. To inaugurate the new 2015 season in Sudan in a propitious way, we are offering our guests the same rates charged on our previous boats. We will not vary or supplement the prices negotiated in autumn 2014, even though the difference in standard will be considerable and extremely evident The Blu Sudan Team - the same tight-knit, professional crew – will complete your welcoming: the boat, the Team and the Sudanese Red Sea will mix into the perfect cocktail for an unforgettable vacation. We await you with joy in our hearts!

  2015 Sudan Itineraries

Southern Sudan Dive Sites - Suakin

You could tend to think that the most beautiful things in these seas are deep.

On average, during a liveabord cruise, the first dive of the day is the deepest. All the expectations are usually on that first dive.

However, Sudan has proved us that this is far of being true. Last week’s cruise 24 March, we had a wonderful second dive (1PM) at Merlo, where we sighted hammerhead sharks, grey sharks and tons of anemones with clown fish, as usual, surrounded  by the incredible corals that you can only find in the red sea (this at no more than 20m/70ft!).

But just to convince us that better not necessarily means deeper, we made another incredible third dive at Sh'ab Rumi (North plateau), where 14 grey sharks were playing around us for about 25 minutes at just 20 meters; as if we were in a theatre.

At the end of this dive, during the “usually boring” safety stop, we start to listen the charming sound of something that someone could think were mermaids. Suddenly, we realise the source of that music... dolphins! They danced for us during 5 minutes just to close a beautiful overture of this opera titled “Sudan”.

Hi,
Just wanted to let you know that I'm back home after the most fantastic diving holiday! Everything worked out perfectly, and the boat, crew, dive guides and the actual diving were all even better than I'd hoped. We were incredibly lucky with our dives, seeing huge groups of hammerheads, loads of white tip sharks, silky sharks, reef sharks and even a tiger shark, as well as one huge beautiful manta ray.
Thanks so much for organising the trip - I really had the most wonderful time!
All the best,
Catherine

The reputation of Sudan as a no-go area for tourists is somewhat unfair.  Although a trip to Khartoum is ill-advised, Port Sudan is perfectly safe for tourists, and the diving is so spectacular that it is well worth a visit.

The diving in Sudan is simply stunning.  The visibility is incredible, the coral completely unspoilt, and marine life so abundant that every dive was truly amazing; I quickly ran out of superlatives to write in my logbook.  A real highlight is the schools of curious hammerheads that come within a few metres of divers.  For those interested in diving history, a day and night dive on Precontinent II - the underwater living experiment set up by Jacques Cousteau – is a treat.

The diving is challenging, and the guides were very knowledgeable, professional, and friendly, as were all the guys working on the boat.  The boat itself is great – probably the best one in Sudan.  There’s plenty of space to relax, a huge sun deck, and a spacious dive deck.  The food was fantastic, & the cabins comfortable and well appointed.

The trip itself was very well organised: we booked at the last minute, but the company still managed to get our visas etc. sorted in time.  A day in Cairo is a necessity rather than a pleasure as the flights to Port Sudan only leave once a week, but it gave us time to see the Egypt Museum (where Tutankhamen’s treasure is housed) and the Pyramids, where my husband certainly perked up as he was offered the opportunity to swap me for some camels.  At the end of the week’s diving, we were also allowed to wander round Port Sudan, and to visit Suakin, the old port that was built entirely from coral.  Suakin is very dilapidated, but our guide reassured us by insisting that the buildings “only fall down during the night”.

We have dived in the Egyptian bit of the Red Sea, Spain, Australia, and New Zealand: we can honestly say that the diving in Sudan is the best that we have encountered, and we cannot recommend it highly enough.

The Umbria & North - Wingate Reef
Sailing from Port Sudan, guests conduct their first dives on the wreck of the Umbria, an Italian freighter sunk on June 9, 1940, the day before Italy went to war. She was headed to East Africa carrying over 300,000 bombs and other war supplies for Italian troops. The reason for her unfortunate fate is a mystery, but some believe she was scuttled by her captain for fear that she would fall into the hands of the British. Others maintain that she was under threat from a German submarine. Today she lies on her port side in 35m to 40m of water.

Sanganeb
The coral reef surrounding the site of the famous British-built lighthouse at Sanganeb has everything a diver could wish for. Rising from depths of 800m, the outer drop-offs boast caves and gullies, and one of the richest displays of soft coral in the Red Sea. Guests will spot an abundance of species in just 20m of water. In the depths, graceful hammerheads sweep back and forth awaiting a photo opportunity.

Sha'ab Rumi
In 1963, Jacques Cousteau mounted an expedition to Sha'ab Rumi to study Red Sea coral life. Guests are allowed to dive the remains of the team's underwater base, the Precontinent II shelf. Marine life is scarce, but the metal remains of the equipment shed and flying saucer-like structure, which are now delicately encrusted, are well worth a visit.

Sha'ab Rumi South Point
Prone to strong currents, this dive begins at the top of a coral formation and gradually drops to 20m, where you encounter three routes all falling away to 700m. Most species endemic to the Red Sea can be found here, including large numbers of barracuda and sharks that are not afraid to pose for the camera. Night dives are held in an enclosed lagoon.

Sha'ab Su'adi (weather and time permitting)
Guests are taken to the wreck of the modern cargo vessel Blue Bell, which lies keel-side up with the prow at 15m dropping down to 70m. Diving below 35m is not recommended, and divers are advised to keep an eye out for tiger sharks. Details of the itinerary are flexible and subject to weather conditions. Guests booking two-week trips will usually visit Ma Sharif and Angarosh, famous for their majestic manta rays. Two or three dives a day are included as standard, and two night dives during the week.

Southern Sudan
The Suakin Archipelago
(June & October)
South from Port Sudan past Suakin lies probably some of the best diving in the World. The Suakin Archipelago is made up of a group of islands offering some of the most unforgettable dives you will ever make in the Red Sea. A lot of the reefs within this constellation have not been dived, and journeys to the area are reminiscent of early exploratory diving.

The few dive sites mentioned here are resplendent of the Red Sea at its best with dazzling reefs and an underwater universe of dense soft and hard corals and unparalleled shark activity. Due to limited anchorage this itinerary is offered on a few selected departures between April and June.

Karam Masamirit offers relatively safe overnight anchorage inside the archipelago. Located immediately south of Masamirit, your first point of call from Port Sudan, this huge reef rising from great depths probably displays some of most colourful coral life in the Red Sea. By positioning yourself on a ledge either to the north or south depending on the current, you will see some unforgettable sharks.

Dahrat Ghab is rated by the few that have dived there as the best dive site in the Red Sea, boasting the most colourful and prolific growth of coral everywhere you look. Coral simply abounds in the most awesome visual expression. Here you can also expect to find some of the largest sharks you will ever see along with an abundance of every fish specie known in the Red Sea.
