Diving Holidays to The Maldives: Liveaboards and land-based trips
The Maldives Islands lie South West of India. Scattered across the equator in the middle of the Indian Ocean where the gem-like islands of the Maldives depict the rare vision of a tropical paradise. Palm fringed islands with sparkling white beaches, turquoise lagoons, clear warm waters and coral reefs teeming with abundant varieties of marine flora and fauna, fascinates visitors as it has for thousands of years. Truly a natural wonder, the height of the islands rarely reaches above 6 feet higher than the water. The 1196 islands consist of 19 atoll formations spread over an area of 56.000 square miles. The islands are surrounded by shallow crystal clear lagoons enclosed by coral reefs. These unique islands provide visitors with one of the most breathtaking views of underwater life in the world. Formed above peaks emerging from the depths of the ocean, upon layers of both living and dead coral as well as remnants of other marine life, the islands are generally covered with dense tropical vegetation. Coconut palms tower above dense undergrowth that protect the shores from erosion. The smaller islands are sand banks under formation The climate is warm year round, determined by the monsoons. However, being on the equator, the monsoons are mild and not as defined as in neighbouring countries. Of the two monsoons, the South West monsoon from May to October brings more rain and wind. The North East monsoon, from November to April, is the dry season. The air temperature varies little with an annual average daily maximum of 94F and minimum of 75F, while the water temperature ranges from 82F to 86F. The annual rainfalls run around 12 inches with a total of over 2.700 hours of sunshine each year. The Maldives are know for their enchanted underwater world. The translation of the word " Maldives " means "Realm of the thousand islands". Of the about 1.200 islands, only 200 are inhabited by a population of mainly fishermen. Another 80 islands are set aside exclusively for tourism resort development .
To: Diving World Subject: We're back
from our amazing holiday!
We arrived
home late last night and I wanted to send you this quick email to
let you know what a truly awesome and amazing holiday we had in the
Maldives...You did a fantastic job for us.
While the Maldives certainly have some gorgeous reefs, it's the fish life that makes them an outstanding dive destination. There are three distinctly different types of diving: inside the atolls, outside the atolls and inside the channels or passes, which is where the currents are strongest and you'll find the greatest congregation of fish life. Most intriguing are the cleaning stations, found around every corner and under every ledge. Groupers, Snappers, Surgeonfish, Eels, Parrotfish, even Giant Napoleon Wrasse park casually in corners, oblivious to all (including cameras) while armies of wrasse, shrimp and other assorted cleaners pick at debris in their open gills and cavernous mouths.
The big attraction, however, are the schools of fish that patrol the reefs in colourful packs: Humpback and Black and White Snappers, Trevally Jacks, Barracuda, Batfish, Unicornfish, Yellowback Fusiliers and Harlequin Sweetlips almost comical in design. The reef's larger inhabitants, including sharks, rays and occasionally even Whale Sharks, are often seen cruising in the blue. This parade of awesome marine life combines with exquisite coral covered backdrops to create many of what is surely some of the world's most extraordinary dives.
Dive sites in the Maldives are widely scattered while hotel based clients only have access to a limited number of good diving spots; a far greater number can be reached on a liveaboard, making it the ideal holiday for experienced divers.
The great magic of the Maldives is the tame fish life to be found on very shallow, sun dappled reefs. This is one of the best places in the world for fish photography. The fish are intensely colourful, swarm in great numbers over the reef, and are nearly tame.

Laamu Atoll, with exploration of remote and un dived reefs
including Thaa, Meemu and Felidhoo Atolls ending the cruise
in the south Male atoll. From May to October during
Southwest Monsoon period the Duke of York seeks whale

MSY Siren
The 34-metre SY Maldives Siren
is a handcrafted Indonesian phinisi constructed in ironwood
and teak and sailing under seven sails. She is purpose-built
for divers, with superb facilities for the underwater
photographers as well as for the watersport enthusiast or
the adventurous sailor. The boat takes up to 18 guests.
The spacious and modern air-conditioned saloon has a
cocktail bar, 42-inch flat-screen TV and a computer
supporting the inter-cabin network. There is plenty of space
to relax on the comfortable sofas while enjoying a
post-diving drink.
Delicious international and Asian cuisine is offered, with
individual requirements happily catered for. Imagine
enjoying a superb meal while looking out across the wide
expanse of ocean from the covered outdoor dining area near
the stern of the boat on the main deck.
There are eight large, en-suite, air-conditioned cabins each
with its own computer and audio-visual entertainment system
complete with 20-inch flat screen, high definition monitor
integrated into the yacht’s network server in the saloon.
Each cabin has a lavish array of luxury facilities,
including hairdryers, towels and individually-controlled
lighting and air-conditioning. The boat has three decks; the
lower deck has all the cabins, the main deck has the dining
area and the dive area, and the upper deck has the lovely
sun lounge area.
The boat offers satellite phone facilities. Other facilities
on board include a small boutique shop selling books,
tee-shirts, hats and souvenirs. For those in the mood for
some serious self-indulgence, why not try the massage
service.
The dive area is on the main deck with space for twenty
divers and further space for the dive crew. With a maximum
of 16 divers on most trips, it means that the area is very
spacious and allows for each diver to suit up in comfort.
Each diver has his or her own place to store equipment.
Divers set up their dive kit once only, at the start of the
cruise. For the rest of the trip the crew will prepare your
dive kit for you for every dive. Cylinders are filled in
situ with air or with Nitrox (which is provided at no
additional cost). The dive platform provides easy access to
the two dive tenders, one of which is 5.8 metres and the
other is 5.2 metres in length. Divers usually enter the
water from one of the tender boats and dives are usually ‘go
with the flow’ drifts with an easy climb up one of the
ladders on return. The tenders are staffed by very
experienced crew and they will be there to greet you at the
end of the dive. The crew comprises the most experienced,
multi-lingual instructors who are available to teach PADI
courses from Open Water to Divemaster. They are fully
trained to look after your dive and photography gear, either
as much or as little as you wish. Thorough dive briefings
are given before every dive, and you may elect to dive with
the dive crew or with your buddy. There is a fresh water
shower on the dive platform and another two showers on the
same deck for post-dive rinses. Photographers and
videographers have their own large rinse tank with fresh
water, which is changed on a regular basis. There is a
further rinse tank for computer, mask and dive light
rinsing.
M/Y Conte Max
Conte Max offers a synergy between luxury and wellbeing
after dives. Top design and high quality standards feature
on this 33-metre-long and 10-metre-wide yacht. Conte Max
features 3 spacious decks/sundecks with sun loungers. There
are 2 restaurants, one outdoors and one indoors, both
offering menus comprising Italian and Maldivian dishes of
fresh fish, although the crew is always available to satisfy
the different requirements of the participants; the dinette,
characterised by its fine wood furnishings and its parquet,
is also a relaxing meeting point; the 4 triple cabins and
the 4 double cabins are all en-suite with shower and
independently controlled air conditioning; passengers can
also enjoy a boutique, a library and an internet point.
The Conte Max does not just offer the comfort of any other
yacht; the owners have developed a concept of cruising which
combines the regenerative wellbeing inspired by such a
breathtaking location as the Maldives. Conte Max is one of
the very few Liveaboards offering a small SPA specialising
in Ayurvedic treatments.
The Conte Max has a crew of 8 and is backed by a 15-metre
Maldivian dhoni complete with all diving equipment and other
activities (canoeing, angling and trolling) and 2 big-game
fishing chairs. As well as the more traditional itineraries,
between January and March the Conte Max will cruises the far
south Suvadiva atoll, including the pristine reefs and coral
reefs of
Huvadhoo Atoll and Gaafu Atoll. This is by far the most the
most spectacular and adventurous diving in the Maldives,
which ‘luckily’ has until now been closed to tourism.
Cabins 8 large cabins,
namely: 1 suite (second
deck) with one queen size bed and one single bed 4 triples with one
double bed and one single bed 3 twin bed cabins. All cabins feature

has a bar offering a wide choice of soft drinks and spirits
and a TV-DVD-Stereo area furnished with comfortable rattan
sofas . All the furniture inside the yacht is made of
valuable Maldivian wood, which lend the place a unique and
particular feel.

MADIVARU 7
Although Madivaru 7 is one of the earliest Maldives Liveaboard it is
nevertheless a yacht with unbeatable character, style and comfort.
Every little detail is so well maintained and preserved.
This Liveaboard
is a favourite with repeat visitors, especially small groups who
succumb to her charm and of course unbeatable value for money. Madivaru was completely refurbished
in 2008 and is owned by the same operator as the Maldives
Aggressor.
Most
of the woodwork, even the hull and decking, is made of thick teak.
Many of the internal fixtures, such as lights, mirrors, bathroom
fixtures, etc. were imported from Italy. The overall level of
craftsmanship is superb, and Madivaru 7 is a beautiful dive vessel.
A total of 16 guests are accommodated in eight double occupancy
cabins. Most cabins have both a large double bed below and a single
bed above. Each cabin has a porthole, high "cathedral" ceiling, very
good lighting, a full-length mirror, and a good amount of storage
space. All cabins have an attached private bathroom, toilet, and
shower remarkably spacious by live-aboard standards. Diving is
accomplished from traditional dive dhonis that accompany the cruise.
Madivaru 7 is fully air conditioned, with thermostat control in
every room, and equipped with three 35 kw generators, providing both
110 and 220 volts electricity. It is also equipped with an advanced
satellite communication system, sonar, GPS, water maker, ice maker,
hot water, a VCR and TV for your video playback
Diving is carried out from the escorting 15 metre local diving boat,
called "diving dhonie", which follows the divers from the surface.
This is the safest and most comfortable way to do the diving in the
Maldives. Every diver will have his own seat and his own basket
where he will store his diving gear, which will always remain on the
diving dhoni. The system leaves the main boat free to handle
accommodations, meals and social activities in a quiet and
uncluttered atmosphere.The
cozy salon has dining tables, television/VCR and soft couches. Meals
are served buffetstyle, with European (especially Italian), American
and local cuisine. On the expansive main deck, there's plenty of
room for sunbathing or shaded relaxation under a canopy; a large
camera prep and storage table and E-6 processing system occupy the
centre.
